Volunteer Information
Would you like to spend a couple of days participating in an exciting event and volunteering for a great organization at the same time?
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a not-for-profit organization that helps form partnerships between corporations and local high schools to encourage student interest in science and technology.
Together, the corporate mentors and students have only 6 weeks to design and build a highly functional robot. These robots compete against each other at exciting Regional events and, if they qualify, at the FIRST finals competition in Atlanta in April.
Student involvement in this program is proven to significantly increase students' interest in math and science. Dean Kamen, founder of FIRST, believes that the future of this country is dependant on generating more talent in the math and science fields.
This program has grown significantly in the past several years and over 1,300 teams are participating this year with over 32,000 students!
Volunteers are generally needed for the following positions:
- Crowd Control
- Volunteer check-in, Media check-in
- Team Queuing - ensure student teams are in the right place at the right time
- Field Set up - construct the playing field on Wednesday
- Field Reset - reset the field after each round of competition
- Robot Inspectors - weigh and measure the robots to be sure they are within regulation
- Safety Inspectors - ensure participants are acting in a safe manner
...and many other volunteer roles
Breakfast, lunch and a T-shirt will be given to all volunteers.
